GillyMac Designs Senior Sewing Group with their Sunflower Quilt

Sunflower Magic Quilt was made by a group of girls (all 12/13 years old at the time) attending an after school club in Berkshire, run by textile artist Gilly Towell in her studio.

The group created the quilt for the Festival of Quilts in 2014 where the theme was In Your Garden’; the young artists involved were really excited to design a piece from the outset. They digitally pixilated the sunflower image themselves, chose the fabric colours, as well as building the piece and learning how to long arm quilt.

The biggest challenge was the size. We took it to a Long Arm Quilter who taught the girls how to ‘McTavish’ (a long arm quilting technique), over the quilt and add circles (like seeds) in the middle.
