Stanley created ‘Dad’ whilst attending Arches Art Club, Peckham led by ceramicist Loraine Rutt. These are small group tuition sessions which take place in her professional ceramics studio. The Arches Studios are a series of independent studios, so students also see a range of other makers at work, including ceramicist Jane Muir and sculptor Joss Smith.

For this project the club also looked at the work of a range of artists from Matisse and Van Gogh, to Tacita Dean and Cornelia Parker.

Stanley was asked to draw from memory his favourite or most memorable day of the summer and develop it into a sculpture.

The students also looked at the work of a range of artists from Matisse and Van Gogh, to Tacita Dean and Cornelia Parker.

Stanley chose to depict his dad relaxing on his first overseas holiday (Stanley’s first, and the first in many years for Dad who runs a business that is open seven days a week).
